Malcolm Mackay
Urban Sustainability: Why, What and How?

We take the urban environments in which we live, work and play for granted. We assume that they are the best they can be and always will be. But that’s a dangerous assumption.

Urban environments are created as a response to needs and those needs change over time. Furthermore, the way in which an urban environment works also changes as it grows

If we want our city to sustain itself and be the best it can be in the future, it needs to be planned and designed differently from the way it has been done in the past.

Malcolm Mackay provides an insight into the issues that out city faces, the elements of urban sustainability and best-practice urban design, and some of the things we need to do to make our city a better place.

James Best
Why Does Baysie Need to ‘Evolve with the Times’ and be Thoughtful About the Future of our Descendants ?

How can the community, business and governments work together through a shared vision, collaborative action and good governance to achieve a positive future ?

Community Visioning acts as a catalyst in bringing people together, developing relationships, building trust and getting ‘buy-in’ about what we are for.

What can we do to ensure Bayswater does not become a place that is unsafe and unfriendly; divided socially, culturally and economically; with housing that is increasingly unaffordable for families, the young and old – and a town centre that lacks community soul…

James will talk about how Community Visioning puts locals at the centre of the conversation, using an approach that is safe (civil), informing, positive and future focused on what we need to do to make our place livable and resilient in the face of increasingly complex challenges.

Meet The Speakers

Future Bayswater Speaker Julian Bolleter

Malcolm Mackay
Director of Mackay Urbandesign

Malcolm Mackay is a director of Mackay Urbandesign, and Western Australia’s leading urban designer. Malcolm also spent 4 years as a DAP member and currently sits on Design Advisory Committees for the Cities of Perth, Melville, South Perth and the Town of Victoria Park.

Malcolm originally trained, qualified, and practised as an architect before using his architectural skills in the planning realm, both in the public and private sectors, to ensure that planners have a better understanding of how buildings work and to demonstrate how urban and architectural design can contribute to the creation of a functional, sustainable and desirable urban environment.

In short, Malcolm is one of the few architects who really understands the bigger picture and one of the few people in the planning realm who truly understands the details.

Over the last fifteen years, Malcolm has focussed heavily on the related issues of urban structure, transport and built form, and how they can optimally accommodate the growing pressures of increasing density in existing areas whilst retaining the values that are important to the community.

In addition to his work in the planning, urban design and architectural realms, Malcolm is also a professional artist and uses his art to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the lost art of traditional architecture.

Future Bayswater: Future Vision

What is wanted? A livable, vibrant and connected Town Centre.
Why? To become a "go-to" destination rather than a "go through" in desperation.
How to do this? By supporting a comprehensive Future Vision via an Activity Centre Plan.
Why Bayswater? It's a strategic inner urban hub that hasn't realised its full potential ... yet.
